Out of 53 public and private high schools in the country, the USHS team ranked 7th in the 2009 Kapnayan National High School Chemistry Contest held at the University of the Philippines Los Banos, Laguna on Nov. 14.
The team was composed of Stephanie N. Lopez, Janelle R. Gagelonia, Justin Jesse L. Seranilla, Jose Emmanuel G. Rivera and Raisa M. Tumbocon.
The team was among the top 20 teams that advanced in the final round.
“We are very proud to represent our school and be part of Kapnayan 2009. It was a great experience competing with students from other schools all over the country. Even though we didn’t make it to the top five, we are still proud of what we achieved,” Seranilla said.
“It was my first time to join a contest outside USHS. Before the elimination round started, I felt nervous knowing that we will compete with the best students of the Philippines. But we did our best and made it to the final phase,” Lopez added.
“When we knew that we couldn’t make it to the top 5, we were dismayed but our coaches were there to cheer us. I think it was not just our teachers’ support that enabled us to win, but our prayers and faith in God really helped,” Lopez concluded.
At the end of the competition, the Laguna Colleges was declared overall champion. The Pasig City Science High School and University of the Philippines Rural High School were the 1st and 2nd runners up respectively, while the Philippine Science High School-Diliman and Integrated Development School end as 3rd runners up.
The activity aimed to cultivate a culture of environmental consciousness among the Filipino youth through Chemistry and stimulate enthusiasm and awareness in the field of Chemistry.
The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) Chemical Society sponsored the contest.
Aside from the National High School Chemistry Quiz, the affair showcased the breakthroughs and advancement in Chemistry through technical exhibits, audio-visual presentations, educational tours, nature trips, essay writing, extemporaneous speech, poster-making contests, series of seminars, chemical magic show.
The team was under the tutelage of Mr. Lexter R. Natividad and Ms. Aileen G. De Guzman. Prof.Randolf Warren Gregorio T. Mayo II and Mr. Vijarie Arvi Niño S. Limbaco were also present during the contest.
